Under the banner of the Environmental Policy Forum the IES has written two letters to government departments on fracking and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The first letter was sent to Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills highlighting a number of significant risks and harmful consequences associated with hydraulic fracking. The letter argued for further independent research and the introduction of stringent controls.
The second letter to Owen Patterson MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs followed a speech he had made on GMOs. The letter highlighted the need for a well-defined regulatory environment and the application of the precautionary principle.
