Following the 2024 General Election, the new UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to producing a Land Use Framework for England.

To support IES members seeking to understand how the long-promised Land Use Framework for England may affect their work, the IES has published a short briefing providing context, a summary of commentary about the forthcoming Framework, and analysis of potential implications for environmental scientists and those engaged in environmental policy.

In July 2024, the IES published its 'Message to Government', calling for the new Government to “Reach a cross-governmental consensus on the use of land, supported by a Land Use Framework that coordinates – and manages trade-offs for – social, economic, and environmental objectives” with specific reference to food security, public health, and addressing the linked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution.

What next?

How can you stay informed and make a difference?

The IES will continue to stand up for the voice of science, scientists, and the natural world in policy, helping people to solve environmental challenges and co-creating a sustainable society where people and nature thrive.
