The FWR Community is growing

The Foundation for Water Research (FWR) Committee is pleased to welcome Dr Ana Mijic as a new Committee member. The FWR is an independent community of professionals from across the water sector and related scientific specialisms. They come together for deliberative discussion to support the development of interdisciplinary solutions to water challenges and are governed by the FWR Committee.

Ana is Reader in Water Systems Integration in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Her research is at the forefront of advancing systems approaches to water management. She works on developing the methods and tools to tackle the intricate complexity of water systems. The work is underpinned by the concept of Water Systems Integration (WSI), defined as a process of coordinating human water needs and protection from water-related impacts while minimising pollution and environmental degradation. Her research group has developed WSIMOD – Water Systems Integration Modelling Framework – open source software to generate comprehensive evidence for key stakeholders such as government departments (e.g., Defra and Environment Agency), water companies, and regional and local planning authorities regarding the performance of water systems. This evidence is intended to inform strategies for integrated water management and planning at the systems level, which, in turn, supports collaborative decision-making.

Ana said the following about joining the Committee:

"I am very excited to join the FWR community and support the IES initiatives that prioritise the environment in policy decisions and regulations. I look forward to contributing to efforts that focus on a whole-water systems approach and utilise integrated water cycle models for evidence-based policy assessment."

How can I get involved in the FWR Community?

If you are a professional working in the water sector, you can engage with the Community and contribute to their work in a number of ways. The work of the FWR is informed by three Technical Panels, who provide expert insights on their focus area and deliver an ambitious work plan of activities. If you are interested in joining a Technical Panel, please get in touch with Ethny Childs (ethny@the-ies.org), Communities & Partnerships Lead.
