Adam is a Technical Director at Air Quality Consultants (AQC), part of the Logika Group, where he leads the group’s industrial emissions and environmental permitting service offering. Prior to joining AQC in 2021, he worked at Wood for 17 years where he acted as the UK and Europe subject matter expert for air quality, and as the Energy Sector Portfolio Director. He has previously contributed his time to, and authored publications on behalf of, the Energy Institute’s Emissions Working Group, and has acted as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Air & Waste Management.
Entering the final year of his BSc in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science from the University of Leeds, Adam had a summer placement within the EHS department of a semiconductor manufacturer. Here, a requirement for dispersion modelling of emissions to air arose to support the installation’s application for a permit under what was then the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (now Environmental Permitting Regulations). Working closely with the environmental consultancy appointed to deliver this assessment, Adam subsequently decided to focus his undergraduate dissertation on dispersion model development, and on developing a model that accounted for some of the recent advancements in the understanding of boundary layer physics, but which could be deployed over the internet.
Upon his graduation, Adam joined the same consultancy he worked with during his summer placement as an air quality specialist. However, as his interest had always been more biased towards industrial applications, Adam’s experience quickly expanded to focus on the wider environmental aspects of industrial facilities.
In his current role, Adam distributes his time between delivering core air quality services (including dispersion modelling, management of emission and ambient monitoring surveys) and wider environmental permitting support for industry, where he leads new permit applications, variations to existing permits, permit transfers and permit surrenders. His sectoral expertise includes oil and gas refining, large and medium combustion plants, organic and inorganic chemicals, minerals, food and drink, waste treatment, waste incineration, non-ferrous metals, metals surface treatment, ceramics, animal byproducts and pulp and paper. His experience extends internationally to countries including Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Singapore, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, India, Tunisia and Liberia.
In addition to his work for industry, Adam also supports governments and other regulatory bodies to develop and evaluate industrial emissions policy. He was Project Director for several studies for the European Commission, which supported the recent proposed revision to the Industrial Emissions Directive, and developed the common framework and associated guidance for the wider deployment of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems and Predictive Emissions Monitoring Systems in Singapore. He is also leading several projects for Defra and the Environment Agency under Defra’s Research, Development and Evaluation Framework.
Adam has been a Member of the IES and the IAQM for close to 15 years. He joined because of the reputational benefits associated with full membership to institutions representing the main authoritative voice for air quality and environmental professionals in the UK, and to have access to resources that keep him fully appraised of emerging issues and innovation in the sector.
