Pierangelo Di Stefano

Pierangelo is Principal Consultant as part of Noise Consultants Limited, working on noise and assisting in the coordination of wider environmental topic areas such as carbon, air quality and environmental strategy for aviation projects, which includes airport development, airspace change and research works.

He is currently working on different aviation projects such as the Heathrow Airspace Modernisation, Gatwick Airport’s Noise Action Plan and Fiumicino Airport’s noise strategic plan. In the past he has worked on the Airport Noise Reduction for the European Commission study, providing an overview of how aircraft noise is currently being managed within the European Union. He has also worked on the London Heathrow Expansion project covering Future Runway Operations, assessments and monetisation of health impacts, and the "Likely Significant Effects" assessments as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment.

Pierangelo has 10 years of experience, spanning transportation noise and vibrations – in particular with aviation, as well as railways and underground train movements – to building and Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) acoustic design working on a wide range of projects including education, and residential and commercial developments from planning to detailed design. He graduated in Sound Sciences at the Università' Degli Studi Di Roma Tor Vergata, Italy with a dissertation on Railway Noise and Mitigation Measures. He also holds a Master's in Engineering Acoustics from the University of Southampton, UK, with a dissertation on Aviation Noise and the Environmental Interdependencies for Aviation.

When considering an airport and its adjacent areas, he conducts detailed considerations of its potential environmental, social and economic effects. Minimising the impact of one aspect of an airport, for example, does not necessarily mean that all other impacts are reduced. Decisions that are made to manage an individual environmental aspect can be in direct conflict with the management of another problem. Even though the main focus of his work is on aircraft noise management, when Pierangelo supports airports in drawing up their noise management strategies, he requires that the principles of sustainability are demonstrated and evidenced by a full understanding of specific interdependencies such as air pollution, climate change and effects on habitats.

The key message that Pierangelo tries to deliver throughout his work and activities is that the aviation industry needs to embrace a holistic approach. This needs to take into account environmental, social and economic interdependencies, so that informed decisions can be made about the future. His objective is to see the whole aviation industry work together towards agreed common environmental goals, while also responding to the needs of local communities and stakeholders.

Pierangelo is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), a member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (MIEnvSc) and of the Institute of Acoustics (MIOA). Becoming a member of IES was a natural choice, due to the aspects of his job that engage with wider environmental concerns. He has found that the IES is an excellent organisation for the continued learning and development of its members through its coverage of key issues in environmental science and sustainability.
