This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).
The founding of the IES in 1972 was very much part of the birth of modern environmentalism. When we look back on the history of the IES in this, our 50th anniversary year, it is fitting to consider our evolving role in relation to the development of the environmental sector.
To celebrate this milestone, we are asking our members to help us mark the occasion by recording a short 20 – 30 second video congratulating the Institution on its 50th anniversary. You may wish to add some comments about the importance of the Institution, its impact on your career, or the achievements of environmental science over the past 50 years.
The video can be recorded on your phone or another filming device and can be submitted by either
- email to events@the-ies.org;
- or, if the file is too large, it can be sent using WeTransfer. (Once you click on the link, there is no need to create an account. The ‘email to’ should be events@the-ies.org)
The video will be combined with contributions from other members to create a montage of celebratory messages that will be shown to the attendees of the Burntwood Lecture, and used on our social media channels as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.
Burntwood Lecture
Each year the IES holds the Burntwood Lecture, with this year’s event taking place on the 6th December at Burlington House, London. The Burntwood Lecture provides an opportunity for an eminent speaker to talk on a current, critical and often controversial environmental theme. This year our key note speaker is Caroline Lucas MP who will discuss the current energy situation and future pathways for energy production in the UK. The invited in-person audience, numbering around 150, come from the professions, universities and government, with many more attendees joining for the live stream. If you would like to book a free ticket to the event, you can do so here.
