This year's Burntwood Lecture is presented by Professor Joanna D. Haigh, former Co-Director of the Grantham Institute and awardee of the Institute of Physics' Charles Chree Medal and Prize in 2004. The lecture will touch on both the definition and implications of net zero future actions, with a timely look at what was agreed upon at COP26 this year in Glasgow.

This year's speaker
Joanna was Co-Director of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College from 2014 until her retirement in 2019. Prior to this, she was Head of the Department of Physics. Jo's scientific interests include radiative transfer in the atmosphere, climate modelling, radiative forcing of climate change and the influence of solar irradiance variability on climate.
She has published widely on these topics in the scientific literature and also contributed numerous items to the written and broadcast popular media. She has been President of the Royal Meteorological Society, Editor of the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society and of the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences, a Lead Author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and acted on many UK and international panels.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Institute of Physics, the City & Guilds and the Royal Meteorological Society, and an Honorary Fellow of Somerville College Oxford. She was awarded the Institute of Physics' Charles Chree Medal and Prize 2004, the Royal Meteorological Society's Adrian Gill Prize 2010 and appointed CBE in the 2013 New Year Honours.
Our Chair
Julie Hill has an academic background in english, philosophy, politics and ecology, and has had a career in the environment movement. She is presently Chair of the UK’s Waste and Resources Action Programme, a charity working to create a world where resources are used sustainably. She is also Deputy Chair of the Advisory Committee for Social Sciences for the Food Standards Agency, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey. She is a former Director of, and now an Associate of, Green Alliance, one of the UK’s foremost environmental policy organisations, as well as a former board member of the Eden Project in Cornwall and the Environment Agency for England and Wales. In 2021 she was appointed a non-executive member of the new Office for Environmental Protection (OEP).
She has written extensively, including the popular book ‘The Secret Life of Stuff’ published by Vintage Books in January 2011, as well as many Green Alliance publications.
Julie was elected to the IES Council in 2016 and was appointed Vice Chair in 2018. She was elected as Chair in April 2021.
Respondents
Gwen Buck has seven years’ experience working to create positive social and environmental change. She currently works as a Senior policy adviser at leading environmental think-tank Green Alliance where she works in the politics team to engage MPs on climate change science and policy. She also leads Green Alliance’s work on trade.
Previously she worked at the Green Party as Leadership officer, coordinating the activities of the leadership team and working at the highest levels of the party. Gwen has also worked for CHEM Trust and completed an internship with an MEP where she was based in the European Parliament in Brussels.
She holds a BSc in Environmental Science from Plymouth University.
Joseph Lewis is the Policy Lead for the Institution of Environmental Sciences, where he is responsible for working to promote the use of the environmental sciences in decision making and representing the voice of science, scientists, and the natural world. Joseph has a particular interest in environmental science communication and the complex interconnected systems which underpin the natural world and human society.
Joseph is an advocate for transformative change and using social systems to bring together communities with science-led solutions to the interconnected climate, biodiversity, and social crises facing humanity.
Philippe Pernstich is a consultant specialising in carbon metrics and footprinting methodologies. He has been with the Carbon Trust since 2009, working across a range of sectors, including construction, chemicals, manufacturing, packaging, catering and hospitality, providing them organisational, product and value chain footprinting solutions. Philippe is also the lead expert on event carbon footprinting, having worked on major events such as the Tour de France Grand Depart in Leeds and the Tour of Britain.
Philippe holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia and is a Member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences.

The Burntwood Lecture is returning to London on the 25th of November. This flagship event provides an opportunity for an eminent speaker to talk on a current, critical and often controversial environmental theme. The invited audience, numbering around 120, come from the environmental professions, universities and government. Join us for an evening of networking, drinks and canapés.
