In 2014 the Mayor of London introduced bold new emission standards for Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) used on construction and demolition sites. Many Local Authorities did not have the resources to enforce these standards, nor produce the guidance and training materials which the industry needed, so London Borough of Merton applied for funding to manage NRMM inspections across London. This webinar described how the London Borough of Merton have managed this project and explore their key areas of learning.
They have audited thousands of developments and prevented several hundred tonnes of pollutants, including NOx, PM and CO2, from being released into the local environment. The construction industry has been overwhelmingly cooperative and receptive to the scheme. The audit process is straightforward and adaptable, and the London Borough of Merton have developed the expertise to assist others in delivering similar ambitions. They are now looking to spread the word and create lasting partnerships with other industries and authorities across the country in order to help tackle the shared challenge of protecting our environment.
