Alexandros Konnaris

Alexandros works as an Environmental Consultant at ALA Planning Partnership Consultancy LLC in Cyprus. He is involved in the preparation of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) reports, the preparation and coordination of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA and ESIA) reports, environmental forms, environmental due diligence reports, and assisting in the process of obtaining environmental permits in Cyprus. He studied for a BSc in Environmental Science at the University of Leeds and then went on to complete an MSc in Environmental Engineering at Newcastle University.

What Alexandros considers to be thrilling in his field of work is the ability to assess the potential impacts to the environment that may be caused due to the implementation of Projects and Plans, and to establish the necessary measures and limitations that need to be imposed in order to minimise and mitigate the identified impacts.

“Working in Environmental Impact Assessment allows for me to be involved in a diverse range of projects, from buildings and infrastructure to development plans and programmes, which I find exciting, as such projects have the potential to alter and shape the future of a country. I consider the ability to control potential impacts to the environment, before they occur, to be an advantage that is only available for exploitation for a brief period of time, during which we must act.”

Before his current job, Alexandros was employed at Hydrotech Ltd, a Cypriot company specialising in the construction, operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, both for industrial and urban systems. His role involved wastewater treatment plant process design, maintenance and operation supervision, preparation of technical offers, and procurement of equipment and consumables.

In the future, Alexandros is aiming to continue working in the impact assessment sector, while also striving to continue developing his professional skills and knowledge, taking on the various career development and CPD opportunities provided by the IES. He is also interested in achieving Chartership via the IES, in order to further progress in his career as an environmental professional.

“Being part of the IES, a widely recognised professional body, provides a range of opportunities that would otherwise be harder to access, like webinars, publications and specialised information, while at the same time receiving support through a dedicated and experienced group of professionals. One of my aims is to become more actively involved with the IES and to utilise the CPD opportunities provided by the Institution to develop an understanding of areas beyond my current knowledge.”
