Jeremy Head

Jeremy is a freelance contractor for consulting companies in South East England, working primarily in assessing waste streams from construction and demolition sites and undertaking site investigations for contaminated land. This might involve supervising drilling work, groundwater sampling and gas monitoring one week, followed by time in the office to write reports. He has also begun an earthworks supervision role for an infrastructure project in London which is using the Environmental Permitting regime to store and then recover waste landfill materials, with the landfilled waste to be re-used elsewhere on site. For Jeremy, the best aspects of his work are being his own boss and managing his own workload.

The most exciting project Jeremy has worked on would be the London 2012 Aquatics Centre, managing remediation earthworks in the base of the swimming pool. He notes that it was the busiest time of his career and that the short contract was challenging and rewarding.

Jeremy graduated from Sheffield University with a first degree in Environmental Geosciences. He went straight into work by researching environmental consultants in London and secured a job offer with Mayer Environmental. Jeremy notes that it was a great start to his career and he is still in contact with colleagues.

I learned so much in my first role that I didn’t want to leave after 5 years but needed new challenges. I followed opportunities at Entec (now Wood Group), Temple Group, Arcadis, URS (Aecom) and SLR Consulting.”

In freelance work, Jeremy hopes to build on what he has started to continue to develop, to work on more interesting projects and have time for his family.

Jeremy became a Full Member of the IES in 2007 and achieved Chartered Environmentalist status in 2010. Of the route to chartership and his choice to join the IES, he notes: “At the time, the other pathways to chartership were a bit restrictive and could put you into a box. The IES represented a broader membership, as my passions lie in sustainability and protecting the environment.
