The United Nations Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development aims to deliver "the science we need for the ocean we want". To achieve this vision the Decade needs a range of organisations and stakeholders to partner with them and engage with the Decade, helping to deliver transformative programmes, projects and activities. You can sign up to become a partner or register for a user profile for the Ocean Decade here. 

In the run-up to the launch of the Ocean Decade in 2021, the Decade has opened for it's first Call for Action from its partners, whereby partners can request endorsement for their proposed Decade Actions. Proponents of endorsed Decade Actions will have the opportunity to join a highly visible, shared, global effort that builds on decades of achievement in ocean science. There will be opportunities to create new collaborations across disciplines, geographies and generations, as well as opportunities to access new sources of support.

Global Ocean Observing System launches Report Card 2020

In recognition of the fundamental importance of ocean observations to the success of the Ocean Decade, Dr. Albert Fischer, Head of Ocean Observations and Services Section at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, says, “one of the Decade Challenges is to ensure a sustainable ocean observing system that delivers timely data and information accessible to all users on the state of the ocean, across all ocean basins”.

The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Coordination group has therefore launched a Report Card 2020, which provides an update on the status of GOOS, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ocean observations, the advances in observing measurements and initiatives, and the connection with vital services resulting from the observations.
