CSci is changing

The Science Council has updated its assessment criteria for Chartered Scientist (CSci) to bring standards of chartership in line with their new career framework for professional scientists, independent of discipline. The changes are to ensure that CSci remains relevant and fit for purpose.

From the 1st September 2015 the IES will be introducing a new application process and revised competencies for Chartered Scientist (CSci). These are the first major changes to the CSci designation since we were licensed to offer the chartership in 2010. In this time the scheme has recognised the achievements of 265 members of the IES.  We will continue accepting CSci applications under the old competences until 1st November 2015.

Over the last 18 months, the Science Council's Registration Authority has consulted with professional bodies, employers and registrants in their update to the CSci standards. The IES was involved in the consultation.

Dr Bob Chaplow, Chair of the Registration Authority, says of these changes:

There has never been a greater need for professional standards in science and we have been delighted by the positive response through the consultation phase from the Licensed Bodies.

The changes we have made to the Chartered Scientist standards will ensure that they are relevant to employers and clear to applicants. This update completes our professional standards framework and will help to make career progression a reality for scientists, irrespective of their background or route in to science.

Implications
These changes will not affect those who already hold the CSci designation.

For those who have started writing their report under the current system you will need to submit before 1st November, as this will be the final date that we will be accepting the old format.

The new application forms and guidance for those wishing to submit their reports under the new competences are available on the CSci page of the website.

If you have any questions about these changes, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
