As the summer gets into full swing, we want to remind you of all the exciting plans the IES has for the remainder of 2014...
Journals
In August the IES will be publishing an edition of the environmental SCIENTIST themed around the topic of Water Security. Published in conjunction with the University of the West of England and the LLoyd's Foundation, this journal takes a global perspective on socio-economic context of water security as well as some of the challenges associated with protecting water supplies.
The year will conclude with an edition of the journal examining the impact and next steps for the National Ecosystem's Assessment.
Reports and Analysis
In response to requests from our membership we have updated and expanded our popular 2012 publication Environmental Funding Streams. This document bring together a list of available funding streams for research, careers or projects in the environmental sciences. This will act as a resource for members seeking funding for research or projects.
Our investigation into older members finding work has concluded and the results will be published in November.
There will also be more of our popular seies of energy factsheets on our analysis pages.
Events
We have a number of great events scheduled for the rest of 2014, now including more regional events. The Midlands will be our first regional event, with Steve Filkin talking on Waste and environmental management in the upstream oil and gas sector (September 9th). In the North East (September 24th) we have Dr Anil Namdeo, Senior Lecturer in Transport and Sustainability at Newcastle University, discussing cyclists’ exposure to air pollution and his experience of monitoring personal exposure in Mumbai, Jakarta, Tanzania and Newcastle. The South West’s regional event sees UWE’s Enda Hayes and Jenna Brown inviting members to one of their popular fracking seminars (October 8th).
The IAQM will host an event on Dust from mineral sites (September 23rd) to discuss how dust impacts on amenity and ambient concentrations of particulate matter, and how these impacts should be assessed for planning applications. The IAQM's annual DMUG conference will be held on the 2nd December in the newly renovated Theatre Royal Drury Lane and will feature the usual exciting speakers discusing the latest developments in the air quality field.
We are proud sponsors of two more Brownfield Briefing events this year, and as such IES members will be offered a 15 per cent discount on these tickets. Flood Risk management 2014 (October 1st) and Brownfield Briefing Presents - Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS): Practical Solutions for implementing integrated, cost effective Sustainable Drainage Systems (October 2nd).
Finally, this year’s Burntwood Lecture’s keynote speaker will be Steve Rayner from the University of Oxford will take place in December.
Online
We have built a simple, fast and intuative CPD recording tool that will allow you to keep a record of all the events, conferences and personal study that you do throughout the year. Designed to ensure that members are compliant with all the Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Scientist CPD requirements, this new membership service will be rolling out in November.
Technician Grade
The IES has been at the forefront of helping SocEnv develop a new professional register for environmental technicians, intended to address the skills gap between the number of technicians presently working in the UK and the 450,000 needed by 2020. The IES expects to be one of the first professional bodies to offer this new designation as we continue to shape and serve an evolving environmental science workforce.
