Defra’s Clean Air Strategy 2019 and the Environment Act 2021 aim to improve ambient air quality (AAQ).  We are recruiting a senior advisor to support this, to provide technical advice internally and externally, on all aspects of AAQ monitoring. 

The post holder will: 

  • Lead, develop and manage the Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) for AAQ monitors, to continue to provide quality assurance for our national air quality monitoring role;
  • Advise on changes to regulations, and how these impact techniques used in the national monitoring networks/regulated industry;
  • Advise on technical aspects for instrument procurement, for the Automatic Urban and Rural (AURN) network;
  • Provide technical advice to the internal team managing several, national monitoring-networks;
  • Provide technical advice on monitoring PM2.5 for the expansion of the national PM2.5 network, such as equivalence programmes and instrument suitability, necessary to assess Defra’s effective delivery of the statutory PM2.5 target set by the Environment Act 2021;
  • Participate in technical working groups internally and externally, such as the MCERTS certification body, Defra, and BEIS;
  • Contribute to the development of International Standards (CEN) for AAQ monitoring.
  • Provide future resilience in AAQ monitoring expertise, through briefings, training and mentoring, and
  • Contribute to internal and external research in AAQ monitoring.
