The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) is a new public body that’s been established to support environmental protection and improve the natural environment. The OEP’s role is to hold government to account on its environmental commitments, and provide independent oversight and advice on environmental law and other matters relating to the natural environment.

About the job

In this role you’ll be responsible for providing high quality analytical advice to support the OEP’s activities, and you’ll head our scrutiny of the government’s 25 year Environment Plan. You’ll lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a range of analytical products, and communicate the conclusions of analytical projects to stakeholders across the organisation. It will be your responsibility to ensure your team produce high quality, robust analysis that helps the OEP keep abreast of both short and long term patterns and trends. You’ll also be expected to be on top of the ‘big picture’, monitoring and reacting to new data sets and analysis from other bodies within the UK and across the globe.

Alongside leading your own team and supporting their work and professional development, you’ll also be working with experts from the government and external organisations in order to gain new insights and develop strong evidence bases. As one of our leaders, you’ll be required to represent the OEP at external forums such as conferences and stakeholder meetings, fielding questions and explaining and rationalising your analysis and advice.

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape and build the OEP’s analytical functions, and to play a major part in influencing government environmental policy in the years ahead.

About you

You’ll be a proactive self-starter with excellent analytical abilities and experience of working independently across several areas of natural science. You’ll have proven experience of making strategic links and developing insights in an environmental/natural field, balancing findings with the essential details, and drafting technical reports to a high standard.

As a confident, experienced leader, you’ll have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders to build new and long-lasting relationships. A strong communicator, you’ll be able to present your analysis and its conclusions in a way that makes them accessible for a range of audiences, and you’ll be able to support and challenge colleagues and stakeholders in a professional manner. You will also have excellent planning and organisational skills, so that you’re able to allocate work amongst your team and ensure you meet deadlines.

You’ll be motivated to demonstrate how economic analysis can improve policy-making, and have a genuine passion for using your talents to improve the UK’s environmental policies for the benefit of all.
