The challenge
Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. As a Nuclear Associate, you’ll be part of unique organisation, using your knowledge of External Hazards to keep the country safe. It’s varied and vital work, as the rewards reflect.

The role
ONR deals with the entire nuclear lifecycle, which means it’s an organisation like no other. We regulate everything from the latest cutting-edge facilities to decommissioned sites. That means our Inspection team gets incredible scope and experience as they check compliance and improve safety standards.Tasks can range from enforcing the law and investigating incidents, to on-site inspections and assessing safety submissions, depending on specialism. In all cases, Inspectors and Associates must blend technical talents with proven people skills: advising stakeholders, explaining decisions and taking formal enforcement action if necessary. As an External Hazards specialist, you’ll work at the leading edge of emerging science, applying it to very real challenges. You will help ensure the UK’s nuclear facilities remain safe and secure subject to the potential effects of severe earthquakes or the most onerous climate change scenarios. Supporting the Inspection team, you’ll help to regulate the design, commissioning and operation of new facilities, aswell as aging assets. A subject matter expert, you’ll give guidance on your specialism and assess External Hazard aspects of safety.

The person
We’ll train you on the regulatory and legal aspects of the job, but technical expertise is essential. You should have a relevant degree (or equivalent) and the motivation to achieve membership of a professional institution (if you don’t have this already). Equally important, is sound judgment. We’re looking for people who will weigh up contradictory positions, be open to new evidence, and take responsibility for their decisions. You’ll also need the communication skills to articulate a logical, reasoned argument in writing, and to work as part of a team. If you’ve got what it takes, we’ll give you the chance to expand and deepen your knowledge, and progress your career.

Please note that a full UK driving licence is required.

The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £33,473 - £39,256 plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.
