Overview
The Emissions and Air Quality Specialist will sit within the “Emissions” section of the Sustainable Development team. The role will be focussed on delivery of the “Clean Air” aims within the SRB, but due to the nature of mitigation measures that are also likely to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and noise emissions, there will be opportunities to support the “Net Zero Carbon Railway” and “A Quieter Railway” aims.
You will have the opportunity to support the development and lead the delivery of emissions and air quality projects at RSSB. These will include strategy and policy development, industry guidance, technical input and analysis, management of research programmes, and supporting stakeholder engagement to embed the SRB within the rail industry.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the embedding of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB) within the rail industry.
Manage the ongoing operation and performance of the Stations Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) project, ensuring technical delivery of identified objectives and achievement of key performance indicators.
Work with the appointed suppliers for AQMN and guide, oversee and undertake air quality data analysis, QA/QC and reporting.
Develop technical specifications for new emissions projects (e.g. monitoring, modelling, assessments, mitigations and action planning, and other areas as appropriate).
Take full or partial lead on the delivery of technical projects. Carry out reviews and evaluations of project proposals, tenders and deliverables. Work closely with project manager and the appointed supplier(s) to ensure deliverables are technically robust and are delivered on time.
Attend project steering groups and industry working group meetings, provide expert opinion on emission reduction and air quality issues as appropriate.
Provide advice and work collaboratively with relevant rail industry stakeholders and government departments (for example Department for Transport) on the development of projects and policies.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing projects and experience of managing air quality monitoring programmes (it is anticipated that this role would be suitable for someone who is, or progressing towards becoming, a Senior Consultant).
- Passion for sustainability and the environment.
- Good understanding of the key air quality policies and legislation and professional experience in the air quality topic in general, and in particular emissions control and mitigation measures.
- Experience in analysis of large and complex datasets.
- Proven experience and track record on the delivery of air quality monitoring programmes, and awareness of the latest industry standards and technologies for air quality monitoring
- Track record of successful delivery of emissions and air quality related projects to key public and private sector clients.
- Communicate effectively and share thoughts and ideas through methods appropriate to the audience.

Desirable:
- Knowledge of atmospheric dispersion modelling.
- Experience of working in environmental and transportation consultancy.
- Member of the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM).
- A working knowledge of GHG assessment, policies and mitigation (e.g. PAS2080, GHG protocol, SBTi).
- A working knowledge of noise assessment. policies and mitigation (e.g. Noise Important Areas).
