Separation anxiety: The challenges for the environment from Brexit

Since the vote on June 23rd have you had trouble sleeping? Are you experiencing periods of panic, dry mouth and shortness of breath?

You may be suffering from EU separation anxiety.

For 43 years the UK has been a member of the EU, which has developed some of the strongest environmental laws and standards in the world. Now we are going it alone. How optimistic should we be that this Government will respond to the challenges facing our environment, without the leadership and oversight of the European Union?

To help with this collective anxiety we have organised a support group led by Baroness Parminter, who will discuss the cause, explore the process ahead and maybe offer some potential treatments.

Our speaker was made a life peer in July 2010 and has been a strong and consistent champion of social and environmental issues throughout her career. She is the Deputy Group Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and the party spokesperson on the environment.
She was a member of the House of Lords EU Select Committee and Sub-Committee on agriculture, fisheries, environment and energy until May 2015 and a member of the House of Lords’ Select Committee on National Policy for the Built Environment in 2015. Before entering Parliament, she spent six years as Chief Executive of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

The Burntwood Lecture provides an opportunity for an eminent speaker to talk on a current, critical and often controversial environmental theme. The invited audience, numbering around 150, come from the professions, universities and government. IES president Sir John Lawton will be chairing this event.

Attendance is free for IES Members and invited guests, but places are limited. We anticipate a lot of interest for this fabulous speaker, so book early to avoid disappointment. To reserve your ticket, please email emma@the-ies.org. Members may bring a guest but must register them upon booking.

The evening will include canapes, drinks and plenty of opportunities to network.
