Whether it’s standing up in front of hundreds of people at a conference, speaking at your department meeting of 50, or sharing a presentation with your boss – public speaking fills most people with dread and is something many people actively avoid doing.
Yet public speaking is recognised as one of the most important skills that can elevate your career. Effective public speaking skills indicate creativity, critical thinking skills, leadership abilities, poise and professionalism - qualities which are very valuable for the job market. Speaking at events and conferences is a good way of building credibility.
This IAQM ECN workshop series 'Master the art of public speaking' was designed specifically for early career professionals in air quality, to help unlock their full potential as a confident and captivating speaker. Part 1 was hosted in person at Ricardo London office on Wednesday 21st June 2023, where attendees learnt top tips for public speaking including how to make a good first impression and delivering presentations on air quality and data to non-expert audiences.
Presentations in this session included:
The Science of Public Speaking – Honor Puciato (Ricardo)
Data Storytelling – Sean Will (London Toastmasters)
Presenting Air Quality information – Dr Mark Broomfield (Ricardo)
We also highlighted an opportunity for IAQM Early Career Network members to speak at the IAQM's upcoming Routes to Clean Air air quality conference taking place in October 2023.
The presentation slides from this workshop can be accessed here.
Part 2 of the workshop series is coming up on July 5th, which will give people the chance to apply the knowledge gained from Part 1 and practice skills in a safe and supportive environment. We highly recommend attending both parts of the workshop series to get the most out of the experience. Please visit this page to book onto Part 2.
